It’s no surprise that there is one question on everyone’s mind during BYU’s summer camp: Who will start as QB1 on August 30 and for the rest of the season?
It’s been nearly 2 weeks since the Cougars hit the practice fields for this year's summer camp and the quarterback question has front and center. Walking onto the field are 3 prospective quarterbacks, each itching to prove why they should suit up as QB1 as BYU takes on Portland State in the season opener.
Bear Bachmeier, Mccae Hillstead and Treyson Bourguet have been leaving it all on the field during the preseason practices, showing flashes of leadership, accuracy and poise. But with the competition heating up, it appears the coaching staff may be inching closer to a decision.
At today’s practice, true freshman Bachmeier took the majority of the reps with the first-string offense while Hillstead worked primarily with the second-string. While no official announcement has been made, offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick hinted that Bachmeier might be emerging as the frontrunner.
“He throws a lot of completions,” Roderick said. “He doesn’t take sacks and he’s very accurate out there.”
Still, Roderick and the rest of the staff insist the job is far from filled. Head coach Kalani Sitake was quick to emphasize that the competition is open until the final call is officially made.
“I don't control it. It's the players. If you want to win the spot, it's there for the taking,” Sitake said. “Our job is to put them in the position where they can win the spot, and that's in every position including quarterback.”
For BYU fans, the suspense remains. With just weeks left until kickoff, the QB1 race is nearing an end, and the winner will lead the Cougars into a highly anticipated season.
